The 5th wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass is almost complete.
Booster Course Pass Wave 5 – Kamek makes the cut at last
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe fans are excited as the penultimate set of new DLC courses has arrived. With three new characters and a brand new track, Wave 5 has certainly caused some controversy.
At just over 50p a track, it's hard to criticize the Booster Course DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. However, there are two longstanding complaints that Nintendo has not addressed. The courses have a more cartoonish art style than those in the main game, and none of the courses feature any anti-gravity elements.
Fortunately, Wave 5 brings some surprises. This set includes three beloved characters from Mario Kart Tour: Petey Piranha, Wiggler, and Kamek. Kamek has never been in a console version of Mario Kart before! Each of the characters are cutely animated, and Kamek even emits his signature noises when you beep the horn.
The Feather Cup is the standout tournament, starting with a Mario Kart Tour Athens track. It's a fantasy version of the city, with every building either a temple or a picturesque home. The highlight is Squeaky Clean Sprint, a course that shrinks you to the size of a mouse and has you racing through a bathroom, sink, plughole, and discarded towels.
The Cherry Cup is rather lackluster, with Los Angeles Laps barreling through LA locations and Sunset Wilds lacking the original's sunset. Koopa Cape is the standout, with its deceptively tight turns and Vancouver Velocity's ice hockey game and generic modern city.
Overall, the Booster Course Pass Wave 5 is a great addition and impossible to feel ripped off given its price. Now all that's left is to see who the two extra characters in the final wave will be. We're hoping for Donkey Kong Jr. and Fawful!
