Texas Southern Univ. won't renew contract of football coach Clarence McKinney.
Texas Southern University has announced that they will not be renewing the contract of Head Football Coach Clarence McKinney. His contract will expire on December 15th.

Sports Illustrated reports that in his five seasons at TSU, McKinney had a total record of 12-35, 9-26 of which were in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. In their final game of the season, the Tigers had a close 35-34 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The team started strong, with LaDarius Owens scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter along with Canary Simmons' 96-yard fumble return. Unfortunately, Arkansas-Pine Bluff was able to make a comeback with 22 points in the fourth quarter, including a 30-yard touchdown return by Elijah Jenkins from a blocked punt. Mekhi Hagens scored the game-winning touchdown on a 5-yard run with 1:46 left in the game.

McKinney expressed his appreciation for the opportunity given to him by TSU and said, “I appreciate this opportunity. I don’t take for granted to be the head coach of Texas Southern University Tigers. Growing up in the neighborhood, always hearing the band as a kid. Coming over and playing on the field during those times I was a kid, and playing a little tackle football. It’s a special moment for me to be the head coach at TSU.”

Prior to his time at TSU, McKinney served as an associate head coach and running backs coach at the University of Houston under Kevin Sumlin, and as an associate head coach and running backs coach at the University of Arizona in 2018. The team finished the season 3-8, 2-6 in the SWAC. Jace Wilson led the team in passing with 1,399 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. Owens was the leading rusher with 204 carries for 1,399 yards and 11 touchdowns. Jacob Williams was the leader on defense with 72 tackles and 7.5 sacks.

Megan Thee Stallion recently returned to TSU to give out scholarships to students, a testament to her commitment to supporting the school.
