Temple U's Black AD not supportive of NIL deals, causing financial difficulty for school.
Temple University in Philadelphia was once renowned for its athletics, but recently it has been struggling to keep up with other schools. The TUFF Fund, an organization comprised of Temple alumni, is doing their best to try and help the university become more competitive.

Andy Carl, the Executive Director of TUFF, pointed out that many other universities have been able to build strong strategic alliances that give them great success when it comes to NIL deals and other athletic spaces. Unfortunately, Temple is not quite on the same level, and despite the efforts of TUFF, the university has not made enough of an effort to catch up.

This all changed when Arthur Johnson was appointed as Temple's Athletic Director in 2021. He had a wealth of experience, having worked in top universities such as Arizona State and North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he had overseen billion-dollar projects.

Mr. Johnson was initially hesitant about allowing student-athletes to take part in NIL deals, as he feared it would distract them from their studies. This meant that the TUFF Fund, which had already established a partnership with ADVANCE NIL, had to look elsewhere for donations. They only received one so far, from a former student-athlete who was cut from the baseball team in 2013. Requests to NFL players were declined.

Carl and Johnson have met to discuss the possibility of improving Temple's NIL placement, but Johnson has not made it a priority. While there has been some productive discussions between important athletic stakeholders and the Board of Trustees, it remains to be seen if NIL deals will ever make it on Johnson's priority list.
