On Christmas Day, a horrifying incident unfolded at Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Two teenage girls from South America, visiting with their parents, were eating breakfast at Tartinery when a man lunged at them with a knife. He shouted that he wanted "all the white people dead" before attacking the 16-year-old girl in the back and nicking her lungs, and stabbing her 14-year-old sister in the thigh.
The two teens were rushed to Bellevue Hospital and treated for their non-life-threatening injuries. The younger teen was able to be discharged from the hospital quickly.
The suspect, identified as Steven Hutcherson, 36, of the Bronx, was booted by restaurant workers just before going on the rant and attack around 11.25am on Monday. Metropolitan Transportation Authority officers arrived at the scene less than 30 seconds after the stabbing and Hutcherson dropped his knife and surrendered.
He now faces felony charges of attempted murder, assault, misdemeanor endangering a child’s welfare and criminal possession of a weapon. Hutcherson had been arrested 17 times before, and was known by MTA and New York Police Department cops as being emotionally disturbed. He had pleaded guilty to weapons possession in his arrests from November 6 and July 24. Additionally, he had threatened to have a gun and brandished one, although no firearms had been recovered from his past run-ins with the law.
Grand Central Terminal is a major transportation hub and popular tourist attraction, especially during the holidays. The incident serves as a reminder to be aware of one's surroundings and stay safe when traveling.
