Tech companies agree to White House security safeguards for AI.
The White House recently announced voluntary safety, security, and trust commitments from leading technology companies and firms such as Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Inflection. This is part of the Biden Administration's effort to protect the public from the risks of emerging artificial intelligence and to ensure that the AI Bill of Rights framework is followed.

The White House has been taking this matter seriously, as President Biden held a meeting with experts and leaders in the field of AI last month and Vice-President Kamala Harris had a meeting with consumer protection, labor, and civil rights leaders to discuss how to leverage artificial intelligence while still protecting people.

However, Amba Kak, executive director of the AI Now Institute, is skeptical of this effort, saying that “A closed-door deliberation with corporate actors resulting in voluntary safeguards isn’t enough.” Her organization calls for more public deliberation, as it may lead to different results that could more directly impact business models.

Inflection CEO Mustafa Suleyman disagrees, saying that “It’s a big deal to bring all the labs together, all the companies” and that the “red-team” tests the companies agreed to are a significant commitment. The tests are essentially hackers that the company invites in to try and exploit their systems, similar to the ones that banks use to test their security systems.

The White House's initiative on artificial intelligence is a positive step for the technology industry, but only time will tell if it will be successful. We will have to wait and see what comes out of these agreements.
