Patients who have visited a cosmetic clinic in Sydney's CBD have been advised to undergo testing for blood-borne viruses, including HIV. This announcement was made by NSW Health today, urging individuals who have received injections or "invasive" procedures such as breast implants, facial or nasal line carving at Fresh Cosmetic Clinic on 630 George Street, to urgently visit their GP for testing. The clinic was recently inspected by the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Public Health Unit, which found several breaches in infection control protocols.
It has been reported that some of the procedures performed at Fresh Cosmetic Clinic may have put clients at risk of exposure to blood-borne viruses such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV. The Health Care Complaints Commission of NSW has received multiple complaints about the clinic and its staff, leading them to execute a search warrant on October 16. During the search, evidence was found indicating that unregistered individuals were conducting invasive cosmetic procedures and administering prescription-only medication, including botox injections. Additionally, it was discovered that the clinic had been stocking expired medication and displaying registration certificates of practitioners who were not employed there.
As a result of these findings, the HCCC has issued an interim prohibition order to close down Fresh Cosmetic Clinic Sydney for a period of eight weeks. Dr. Vicki Sheppeard, the director of SESLHD PHU, emphasized the urgency of getting tested for clients of the clinic. She explained that blood-borne viruses can easily be spread between clients if proper infection control measures are not followed. Furthermore, many individuals infected with these viruses may not show symptoms for years, making it crucial for them to be tested to identify any silent infections. However, she reassured that there are effective treatments available for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV.
NSW Health is currently considering further action against the clinic. In the meantime, clients of Fresh Cosmetic Clinic who have concerns are encouraged to contact the HCCC at
