Surama Padhy appointed as Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker
In a momentous development, former minister and esteemed leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Surama Padhy, has officially taken on the role of Odisha Assembly Speaker. Her appointment was met with warm wishes from all parties, including the Chief Minister himself.

During a special session of the Assembly, Pro-tem Speaker R P Swain announced Padhy's election and gracefully handed over the reins to her. With this, Padhy becomes the second woman in history to hold such a prestigious position, following in the footsteps of Pramila Mallik.

It is worth noting that Padhy had filed her nomination papers for the Speaker's post in the esteemed presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, as well as Deputy Chief Ministers KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida. A lawyer by profession, Surama has been a dedicated member of the BJP since 1988. Her political career began in 2004 when she was elected to the Odisha Assembly from Ranpur seat in Nayagarh district on a BJP ticket. She then went on to serve as a Minister of State with Independent Charge in the Cooperation Department during the BJD-BJP coalition government from 2004 to 2009.

This time around, the BJP has formed a government of its own in Odisha after securing an impressive 78 seats out of the 147 members in the Odisha Assembly. The BJD has 51 MLAs, while Congress has 14, CPI has 1, and independents have 3. However, despite the BJP's 78 members, they have also garnered the support of three independent MLAs, effectively increasing their strength to 81 in the 147-member Odisha Legislative Assembly.
