Mandleshwar: On Friday, the district administration responded swiftly to the demands of a group of hostel inmates and removed Hemlata Bamnia from her role as superintendent of Government Tribal Girls’ Education Complex hostel with immediate effect.
Over 400 girls from the hostel marched to SDM Anil Jain’s office, braving a five-kilometer journey through the rain. The girls were determined to speak out about the inadequate infrastructure and facilities at the hostel.
The hostel, which is operated by the Scheduled Tribes Department, is home to 425 girls, but the staff is not enough to meet the requirements. There are only five cooks, one waterman, and two watchmen.
The students had various complaints against Bamnia, including forcing them to do her cooking and cleaning work, and not providing them with the food they were promised. They also reported that their complaints to Assistant Commissioner Prashant Arya during inspections had been ignored.
When the girls arrived at the SDM's office, they made it clear that they would not return to their hostel until action was taken against Bamnia. After reading the order, the girls agreed to return, and the SDM even arranged a bus for them. He also advised the girls on how to address their issues.
An investigation has been launched into the complaints, and Bamnia has been removed from her role. The district collector warned that action will be taken against anyone found guilty in the inquiry.
The parents of the girls, however, have expressed dissatisfaction with the result. They said that simply relieving Bamnia of her duties for the mental torture their children endured is insufficient, and called for a suspension. Assistant Commissioner Prashant Arya said that a departmental inquiry is ongoing and that appropriate action will be taken the following working day.
