Students have defended a teacher in the New South Wales Hunter region after he was accused of assault following a physical altercation in a classroom. Michael Kable supposedly attacked a student at Maitland Grossmann High School after a disagreement between the pair yesterday. Mike Tansi, a student, informed 9News that the 62-year-old educator tried to look after all of them. His classmate Hayden Thomas expressed sympathy, saying, “He’s one of those teachers who tried really hard and honestly I feel for him.”
The mother of the boy engaged in the incident said she does not approve of the students' behaviour, but that a teacher should never lay a hand on a student. Police stated the fight appeared to have started with a paper fight, with video footage taken by another student after the incident. It is said that the teacher was grasping a teen by his collar and forcing him onto a desk. Additionally, a student threw a table in the teacher's direction. Soon after, classmates began fleeing the classroom.
The student involved in the incident was checked over by paramedics, but had no physical injuries. Police confirmed the video will be part of their investigation and the Department of Education is also examining the incident. 9News has attempted to get in touch with Maitland Grossmann High for comment.
Kable was charged with common assault at Belmont Police Station but was granted bail after his arrest.
