Street in Nashville renamed to honor Troop Leader Daisy Lee Gatson Bates, the first black girl scout troop leader.
Josephine Holloway, a notable member of the Black community in Nashville, is now having her name immortalized in the city she first made history. The street she is being honored with is Lifeway Plaza, which is now officially being renamed to Josephine Holloway Avenue.

The original request to rename the street was submitted in September 2022 to the Metro Planning Commission and by February, Mayor John Cooper had already signed off on its approval.

Mrs. Holloway sought a space for Black girls to be part of the outdoors organization, which is now known as Camp Holloway. The camp is located in Millersville, a town around 15 miles north of Nashville, and it has over 76 acres. Here, the attendees were able to experience all the traditions and benefits of being a Girl Scout, which was not always a given for diverse groups.

At the camp, Mrs. Holloway was the lead facilitator and even cut the grass to ensure its quality. Girls Scouts CEO Agenia Clark noted that Holloway saw the obstacles as opportunities and created something special. "She said this isn’t a barrier; this is an opportunity, and she found that opportunity in the land that is now known as Camp Holloway,” Clark said.

To further recognize and honor her importance to the Girl Scouts, a historical marker was created in 2019. Now, with the street being named after her, those who pass by will be able to witness her legacy and be inspired by her story.
