August is Black Business Month, and WREX 13 is shining a light on the incredible work of innovative Black entrepreneurs. This weekend, we take a look at Stephenson Courier Service, a rideshare business based in Rockford, Illinois.
The company provides transport to elderly adults and youth, to and from medical appointments, assisted living centers, and beyond. What's more, they've recently taken up providing transportation for the area’s youth too.
We spoke with Janene Stephenson, who runs the business with her husband and several staff members, about the motivation behind the effort. She told us, “With parents working, it’s hard for them to take the kids out, so part of our business is also having us get the youth together and provide transportation to and from.”
Janene went on to say that her hard work is borne out of a very basic need. “Some of our clients don’t like to be on a bus full of people. But it’s very important because people will always need transportation, courier service, delivery service, so transportation is huge,” she explained.
Throughout the pandemic, Janene and her team have gone the extra mile to help those who are elderly and vulnerable, providing food and other household items.
In September, the company hopes to expand its truck fleet and the number of employees to take more calls and even provide rides for students trying to get to school once classes start in Illinois.
If you’re interested in using Stephenson Courier Service, you can book rides by calling Janene directly at 201-1714.
Let’s take the time this Black Business Month to celebrate the spirit of innovation and resilience among Black entrepreneurs, like Janene Stephenson.
