Sonya Larson, a 48 year old from Olathe, Kansas, has been collecting Black Barbie dolls for over 30 years. She has amassed such a large collection that she has built a shrine in the basement of her home. Now, her love for the iconic Mattel doll will be featured in the upcoming HGTV show, “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge”.
Larson’s collection includes dolls such as the Tina Turner and Ella Fitzgerald dolls, a bald Black doll recovering from cancer, an Albino doll, and the 1984 Black Peaches ‘N Cream Barbie that Larson wanted as a child but had to wait until adulthood to obtain.
When asked about her collection, Larson said, “I just started really looking at them and seeing how beautiful they were. And once I started putting them up … that made me so happy. I mean, you can’t just walk in here and feel sad because … there’s so much beauty in this room.” She also commented on the significance of the collection, saying, “For me, as a Black female…I’m not supposed to love this doll. And a lot of people don’t get that. People don’t understand why I love Barbie. She’s blond. She’s skinny. She’s got blue eyes. Why do you love her?”
Larson is now in the running to be dubbed a “Barbie Superfan”, a title that she is certainly well-deserving of. She has the doll room of her dreams and has planned two fundraising watch parties for the upcoming Barbie movie. Her collection is a testament to her love for the doll and her belief that Barbie can be a great role model.
