Sonic Team leader hopes to create a Sonic RPG, but it's currently just a dream.
Is it possible for Sonic to level up? According to Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka, he would love to create a Sonic role-playing game before he leaves Sega, just in time for the highly anticipated Sonic X Shadow Generations release.

Although Sonic is known for his fast-paced platformers, his history also includes a variety of spin-offs, such as kart racers and even a murder mystery visual novel. One of the more peculiar spin-offs is Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, a role-playing game developed by BioWare, known for their work on Dragon Age. The game was released for the Nintendo DS in 2008, but unfortunately, plans for a sequel were cancelled after BioWare was acquired by EA.

It seems that the idea of a Sonic role-playing game has intrigued Iizuka for quite some time. In an interview, he expressed his personal interest in the RPG genre and questioned why Sonic Team has never attempted one in the past 30 years. He even went as far as to say that he hopes to work on a Sonic RPG before he retires from Sega, although there are currently no concrete plans.

Although Sonic Team has some experience with RPGs through the Phantasy Star Online series, the last one they developed was in 2008. Interestingly, Iizuka himself has never been involved with the series. Thus, the development of a Sonic RPG may still be a distant dream, especially with the studio's focus currently on a potential sequel to Sonic Frontiers.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to Sonic X Shadow Generations, a remastered version of Sonic Generations with a new campaign featuring Shadow The Hedgehog. This game is set to release on October 25 and marks Shadow's first appearance as the main character in a Sonic game since 2005. It also coincides with his upcoming appearance in the third Sonic The Hedgehog movie, where he will be voiced by Keanu Reeves.

While a sequel to Sonic Frontiers seems inevitable, fans can also anticipate other potential projects, such as a rumored Sonic Heroes remake in Unreal Engine 5 and a possible Sega vs. Capcom fighting game.
