Black military service has a long and proud history dating back to the 19th century. During the Revolutionary War, 5000 individuals were enlisted to fight for the Union Army. Even more, over 200,000 brave African Americans served in the US Navy during the Civil War.
Today, about 29.2% of Black men and 16.9% of Black women are currently enrolled in the US military, according to Statista. While we may never know the full range of experiences and stories that Black veterans have accumulated over the past 248 years, there are still plenty of stories that we can access.
If you’re looking for a great read or a meaningful gift to give to a special service member on Veteran's Day, BLACK ENTERPRISE has curated a list of six books that dive into the Black military experience. Here are some of the titles:
Half-American by Matthew Delmont, One Woman's Army by Charity Adams Earley, The Families' Civil War by Dr. Holly Pinheiro, Sisters In Arms by Kaia Anderson, Bloods by Wallace Terry, and The Warrior Code by Gunnery Sergeant Tee Marie Hanible with Denene Millner. Each of these texts will provide an insightful look into the lives of African Americans in the military.
If you are looking to further honor American veterans, you can also check out AFRO News' "Salute to Our Veterans" initiative. It is a great way to recognize and thank all those who have served this country.
