Sigma Gamma Rho is hosting a block party to support Black businesses.
The Alpha Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Inc. held a “Black Businesses Block Party” in Indianapolis. This is the second year the sorority sisters have held this event in order to give a boost to Black and minority-owned businesses in the city. Georgia Street was filled with over 100 vendors featuring a variety of products including food, jewelry and clothing.

The goal of the event was to promote and encourage minority businesses and give them a platform, as Mayrena King, a member of the chapter, told WRTV. Many of the business owners were doing their ventures as side jobs, but the hope is that the block party will help them become financially independent.

The Divine 9 Sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. is also doing their part to help Black businesses succeed. They recently opened a credit union for members, as a way to combat discriminatory lending and banking practices.

Black consumers are often overlooked, however they have an estimated $300 billion of spending value according to a report by McKinsey Quarterly. With this power, along with a preference to buy from within their community, Black entrepreneurs have a chance to thrive.

The Alpha Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Inc. hopes that their block party will inspire other groups around the country to do the same. They believe that if more similar events are held, the Black community will continue to benefit from the support.
