Should Spider-Man 2 be a GOTY contender? How does Mass Effect 3 compare to Baldur's Gate 3? Plus, why do people love Pikmin 4?
With all the talk of Zelda, Baldur's Gate, and Starfield vying for all the Game of the Year accolades, Spider-Man 2 is being unfairly ignored. The gameplay reveal wasn't the best, but that can be attributed to the PlayStation Showcase, which was bad across the board. Despite this, there's every reason to be excited about the upcoming Spider-Man 2 game. Could it be better than Zelda? Maybe not, but it could end up being a contender for the Game of the Year awards.

The talk of Baldur's Gate 3 sex scenes made me pine for a new Mass Effect. It's been over 11 years since Mass Effect 3, and all we've had since then is the dreadful Andromeda and the remasters. It feels like EA and BioWare don't know what to do with the Mass Effect series anymore. I know they're making a new one, but we're not going to get any movement on that until Dragon Age 4 is out, and that doesn't seem like it's going to be anytime soon.

Starfield is finished and there's going to be no more delays. American sites have already decided it's amazing, even though nobody has played it yet. Will it be a great game? It's hard to say. To be a Game of the Year contender, it needs to nail the combat, the space travel, and the dialogue. Has it done that? We won't know until it's released.

I was wondering what GC's feelings are concerning cut scenes for side missions. Do you prefer them or audio log exposition dumps? We prefer them to get on with it.

Finally, if Nintendo are working on a new 3D Mario, what do we think the gimmick will be? I'd like to see flying come back in a bigger way. It was one of my favourite bits in Super Mario 64, and it could be a nod to F.L.U.D.D.

If you're interested in PlayStation VR2, the best way to experience it is to try it somewhere. It's the best gaming experience I've had in a long time, but it's subjective and divisive. Unfortunately, there isn't a good way to try it out other than knowing someone who has one. Gran Turismo 7 has turned me into somewhat of a VR snob, as it was so good. As a result, I find playing flatscreen games to be strangely flat. I'm keeping my eye out for Firewall Ultra, which is releasing towards the end of August.
With all the discussion around Zelda, Baldur's Gate, and Starfield vying for Game of the Year awards, it seems like Spider-Man 2 is being unfairly overlooked. It's true that Sony's PlayStation Showcase wasn't the best, but that doesn't mean we can't be excited about Spider-Man 2. Could it even end up better than Zelda? It's hard to tell, but it's certainly a much different kind of game.

On the topic of RPGs, the recent buzz around Baldur's Gate 3's sex scenes has made me pine for a new Mass Effect. It's been over 11 years since Mass Effect 3 and in that time, all we've had is the disappointing Andromeda and a few remasters. It's like EA and BioWare don't know what to do with the series. I'm sure they're working on a new one, but we won't hear much about it until Dragon Age 4 is out, which looks to be a while away.

Finally, Starfield is finished and there's no more delays. Already, American sites are giving it glowing reviews, although no one has played it yet. We'll have to wait and see if it lives up to the hype.

So, what are GC's thoughts on cut scenes for side missions? Do they prefer them to get on with it, or would they rather have audio log exposition dumps?

And with Nintendo working on a new 3D Mario, what do we think the gimmick is going to be? I'd like to see flying come back to a greater degree, like it was in Super Mario 64. Flying isn't a feature in many games because it's tricky to control and giving the player a big enough world can be difficult. But I'm sure Nintendo could make it work in an interesting way.

Finally, if you're interested in PlayStation VR2, then try and get some hands-on time with it. It's probably the best gaming experience I've had in a long time, but your experience may differ. Gran Turismo 7 has even made me something of a VR snob, as the experience was so good. Now, when I play flatscreen games, they seem strangely flat by comparison.

The lack of announcements about upcoming games is a worry. I'm keeping my eye out for Firewall Ultra which is releasing towards the end of August.
