Shark Week is back and with it comes never-before-seen footage of lesser-known sea animals in their natural habitats. This year, the Discovery Channel special, Alien Sharks: Strange New Worlds, is providing viewers with a unique chance to explore the lives of the many species of sharks that don't get the same attention as great whites, hammerheads and tiger sharks.
Wildlife biologist Forrest Galante has given an insight into what viewers can expect to see in the special, including the first footage ever of pyjama sharks mating. Galante explained that ‘most of the ocean remains unexplored’ and he wants to ‘bring the spotlight’ onto the lesser-known sea-swellers.
When asked what an ‘alien shark’ is, Galante told TMZ that ‘it is not Discovery's play on extra-terrestrials. This is alien being the descriptor for how unique, unusual, and bizarre these creatures are.’ Galante also teased that viewers will be able to see sharks that are striped, glow in the dark, and mating in the deep, deep sea.
The incredible footage was captured off the coast of South Africa on the 30th day of diving in a row, and Galante said that the magnificent moments certainly outweigh any of the close calls with the creatures.
This year's Shark Week is hosted by Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, and features a ‘strangely acting’ hammerhead shark that might be high on cocaine.
So, if you're ready to explore the depths of the ocean and discover the mysteries that lurk beneath, make sure to tune into Shark Week on the Discovery Channel from tomorrow. You never know what you might find!
