The body of a 37-year-old Florida woman, Shakeria Rucker, was discovered in a storage unit owned by her estranged husband, Cory Hill. Reports from WESH 2 stated that the mother of four was found after an odor was reported coming from one of the storage units at an Apopka, Florida Self-Storage.
Sheriff John Mina expressed his sorrow for the Rucker family, saying in a statement that "My heart breaks, I can't imagine the pain and suffering [her family] have been enduring this past week." He went on to say that "We were all hoping for a different outcome." Mina indicated that it appears Shakeria died from a gunshot wound, though an autopsy is still pending.
Hill is the primary suspect in the investigation, though he is currently not cooperating. Mina has expressed his frustration, saying that Hill "could have stopped a lot of the pain and suffering of her family by talking to investigators in the very beginning." Hill is currently in custody at the Orange County Jail for shooting at his ex-girlfriend and her family.
Shakeria had been missing for a week prior to her body being found, and Winter Springs Police Chief Matt Tracht reported that the search consisted of 16-18 hour days. However, Rucker’s family questions the intensity of the search, with her brother Clarence Thornton saying that “they should’ve been pushing since day one.” According to investigators, the last person Shakeria was seen with was Hill on November 11th, the day she went missing.
The last time her family had heard from her was when she said she was heading home to pick up some food. Hill's ex-girlfriend, Angel Milligan, reported that he shot at her and that he threatened her before he shot.
Court records show that Hill had previously been convicted and served time for a murder he committed in Virginia. In 1992, Hill sought revenge on a man who had kidnapped his 23-month old daughter when he stole Hill’s car. Hill shot Dontowine Everett after a brief argument and was later convicted of second-degree murder, for which he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was released in 2005.
The Rucker family is disappointed and angry that Hill has said nothing about Shakeria's disappearance and murder. Thornton said, “It’s very disappointing because you know my sister’s whereabouts, but you’re not talking, you’re not telling us anything.” Rucker's mother, Elaine Rucker, echoed her son's sentiments, saying, “I’m just upset and disappointed, you know, because if she is alive, just tell us so we can get her in time.”
