Billy Chemirmir, a serial killer convicted of murdering two women, was found dead in his prison cell on Tuesday morning. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice revealed that Chemirmir's cellmate was the one who killed him.
Chemirmir was serving two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. He was accused of killing 13 elderly women in Dallas County and nine women in Collin County.
It was reported that Chemirmir would smother his victims at their homes or senior centers before stealing their jewelry for resale. Mary Bartel, 91, was one of the victims who provided a key piece of evidence. She told police that Chemirmir tried to smother her at a retirement center and stole her jewelry after she fainted. This led to the police re-opening their investigation into him.
Cops soon discovered Chemirmir outside his apartment throwing away a big red case containing jewelry and money. This was followed by the discovery of Lu Thi Harris, 81, who was found dead with lipstick on her pillow.
Chemirmir was convicted of killing Harris and Mary Brooks, 87. He was also charged with capital murder for 18 women in the Dallas area and suspected in several more deaths. The prosecutor presented a lipstick stained pillow as evidence during Chemirmir's trial in November 2021.
Despite this, Chemirmir continued to insist he was innocent. He told the Dallas Morning News that he wasn't a killer, and that he was brought up in a good family and had no issues his whole life.
The victims' families have been notified of Chemirmir's death, though the identity of the assailant has not been disclosed.
