In May of this year, the renowned tennis star, Serena Williams, proudly joined forces with Nike to celebrate the renaming of their headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. The campus, formerly known as Nike World Headquarters, has now been officially dedicated to Phil Knight, co-founder of the company. This move solidifies Nike's strong connection to elite athletes and their continuous drive for innovation in the world of sports.
Spanning over 400 acres, the Philip H. Knight Campus boasts more than 40 buildings, each dedicated to enhancing the performance of athletes. These include state-of-the-art innovation labs and recreational spaces specifically designed to promote movement and athletic excellence.
Nike intentionally crafted the campus to resemble a collegiate atmosphere, complete with walking trails, green open spaces, and architecture focused on fitness. But for Serena Williams, her relationship with the campus goes beyond just the recent celebration. In 2022, Nike unveiled the impressive Serena Williams Building, a massive 1 million-square-foot structure that houses the company's design, merchandising, and consumer insights teams.
As described by Nike, this building is their largest investment yet in promoting creativity and collaborative product development. What's more, the Serena Williams Building has been recognized with LEED Platinum certification for its sustainability-focused elements. These include solar panels, use of recycled materials, and measures to preserve the nearby wetlands.
Nike's President and CEO, Elliott Hill, emphasized that the renaming of the campus is a tribute to Phil Knight's legacy, while also reinforcing their long-standing commitment to athletes, creativity, and future growth. Hill stated, "This campus was not built to be your typical office park. It was designed to inspire our teammates, to make them want to do something more with their days.
It embodies the spirit of sport, movement, creativity, and the belief that we all have yet to reach our full potential." In 2026, Nike plans to hold a grand celebration event to formally honor the Philip H. Knight Campus. This announcement comes at a time when Nike is heavily investing in athlete-centered branding and further developing their campus, as competition in the global sportswear market continues to intensify.
As a symbol of their dedication to Williams, Nike also recently honored her with a custom Lincoln Navigator featuring a rose design, showcasing their appreciation for her as both an athlete and a cultural icon.
