Selling a car is seen as more stressful than moving house by 20% of people, and there are many secrets to car-selling in Britain.
Britain is a nation of car lovers, so it's no wonder that many of us have stories to tell when it comes to buying and selling cars. Selling a car can be a stressful experience. In an exclusive survey for Cazoo, nearly 7 in 10 people said they found it hard. In fact, it's so stressful that a quarter of respondents said it was worse than a job interview, and over a third thought organising a family holiday was easier. One in five even said moving house was less stressful!

Those who disliked selling their car the most were from Belfast, Leicester and Bristol, where 78% admitted to finding it a chore. On the other hand, people in Plymouth had an easier time, with more than half saying it was a breeze. It seems selling a car gets easier as you get older – only one in seven teens and 20-somethings don't mind it, rising to nearly half of the over-60s.

So why do people find it so stressful? There are many reasons. If you sell your car privately, you may have to deal with tire-kickers - people who enjoy going around to people's houses to find faults with cars rather than buy them. Timewasters was a common complaint, with 28.5% of survey respondents saying they had experienced it. This was particularly prevalent in Stoke-on-Trent, where 4 in 10 people said they had encountered it.

One in ten respondents said selling their car had led to an argument with their partner, and this was most common in London. Others cited difficulties with paperwork, while some had their car damaged during a test drive - most likely to happen in Liverpool and London.

But it's not all bad news. Only 15.9% of people had a 'nightmare' experience when selling a car, and some even found love. Surprisingly, 10% of respondents knew someone who had met a romantic partner while selling their car. In London, a whopping 22% knew someone who had experienced this.

Finally, some people have had funny experiences. For example, some opened the door to a potential buyer only to discover a friend standing there, both unaware who they had been talking to. Others had their car fail to start when a prospective buyer arrived for a test drive.

Fortunately, today you can sell your car entirely online. 67% of our survey respondents said they would be more likely to buy or sell a car online now than they would five or ten years ago. And with 87% of 18-29 year-olds saying they'd sell their wheels online, it looks like selling your car online is the way of the future.
