Scott Mills, a well-known BBC Radio 2 presenter, recently embarked on a journey to compete in Celebrity Race Across The World. However, things took a turn for the worse when he started experiencing intense headaches and feared he had contracted dengue fever, a mosquito-borne virus common in South America.
The pounding headaches and an outbreak of dengue fever sweeping over Brazil left Scott feeling awful and unable to continue filming for three days. He even asked the producers to halt filming as his symptoms were debilitating. However, it turned out that his illness was not what he had initially feared.
Scott revealed, "I started getting these mad headaches – I don't usually get headaches – but they were so awful that one day I had to say, 'I can't film today, I'm really sorry.'" Despite the efforts of the on-site medic to alleviate his pain with food and medication, Scott's headaches persisted for three days.
Thankfully, his partner and husband, Sam Vaughan, 35, discovered the real cause of his suffering. Scott explained, "Sam asked me, 'When was the last time you had a coffee?' and I realized, 'Oh no, it's massive caffeine withdrawal!'" His coffee addiction, which had caused some tension between the couple due to their limited resources and budget on the show, was the root of his headaches.
Competing against other celebrity pairs such as Kelly Brook and husband Jeremy Parisi, Jeff Brazier and son Freddy Brazier, and Kola Bokinni and cousin Mary Ellen, Scott and Sam raced through South America to reach the final checkpoint in the fastest time. However, Scott's addiction to coffee almost jeopardized their position in the race as he made significant dents in their budget.
But caffeine withdrawal was not the only challenge Scott faced on the show. He admitted to "hating" it at certain points, especially during a bus journey in a heatwave where he thought it was "the end" for him. The bus's air conditioning did not reach the toilet, which was already scorching at 50 degrees Celsius, and the smell of feces made him nauseous for hours.
However, that was not the only bus drama for Scott and Sam. On another journey, their bus broke down, leaving them stranded on the side of the road for hours in what Scott described as the most frustrating moment of his life. He explained, "No one in Brazil speaks English – nobody – so we had no idea how long it would take for another bus to arrive or for the current one to be fixed." The language barrier was the most challenging aspect for Scott, who admitted that he and Sam were "lazy" with languages.
Despite the challenges, Scott's experience on Celebrity Race Across The World has not completely tarnished his love for travel. In fact, he has taken some notes for his upcoming honeymoon and even plans to lock his phone in a safe, just like he had to on the show, to fully immerse himself in the experience.
When asked which celebrity would not be able to handle the show, Scott immediately thought of Rylan Clark. He said, "I was talking to Rylan the other day, and I told him, 'You couldn't do it.' And he replied, 'I don't think I could.' And I said, 'No, no, you absolutely couldn't. I take the train and the tube every day, but Rylan doesn't. That would be a problem for him. Celebrity Race Across The World was next level.'"
