Scott Mills has officially taken over as the new host of the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show, and he couldn't be more ecstatic about it. In fact, he compared his debut to his wedding day, promising to give it his all for his listeners. On Monday morning, the 51-year-old DJ presented his first show, taking over from Zoe Ball who announced her departure in November last year to focus on her family.
As he kicked off the broadcast and played his first song, Robbie Williams' "Rock DJ," Scott couldn't help but joke, "This might be the best day of my life, apart from getting married." And speaking of his marriage, Scott and his partner Sam Vaughan tied the knot in June last year. So, this new gig is definitely a highlight for him.
Reflecting on his 25 years on BBC radio, Scott expressed his hope that listeners would embrace him as part of their morning routine. "I've worked at the BBC for 25 years now, and many of you may have grown up listening to me," he said. "But I'm sure a lot of you don't know much about me at all. Either way, if you could make me a part of your morning routine, it would honestly mean so much to me. I'm going to give it my all and I really hope you enjoy it. Let's go!"
Scott also shared that he's still trying to process that this is all happening. "As a radio presenter and a radio fan all my life, it's still hard to believe that I'm here," he admitted. "If I think too much about the previous hosts of this show, it blows my mind. As a kid, I wanted to be on the radio but wasn't sure I had the self-confidence to actually do it."
But now, as the new host of the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show, Scott has big plans for his listeners. He wants to make them smile, boost their morning mood, and make them do a little shoulder and head dance, whether they're in bed, in the shower, in the car, or in the kitchen. He also promised to keep their spirits up on those days when they're not feeling so great.
But most importantly, Scott wants his listeners to be a part of the show. He wants them to reach out anytime they want and share their stories and their lives. "It's your voice that will make this show something that you'll adore and look forward to every day. That's my aim," he said.
Joining him on the show are newsreader Tina Daheley and traffic and travel reporter Ellie Brennan. But before Scott took over, Zoe Ball signed off last month, and presenters Mark Goodier and Gaby Roslin temporarily filled in. Zoe made history as the first woman to host the Radio 2 breakfast show.
Scott's radio journey began at the young age of 16 when he joined a local commercial station in Hampshire. He then went on to host some of the BBC's biggest shows, including joining BBC Radio 1 in 1998 and hosting the station's early morning breakfast show. He has also presented a variety of programs on Radio 1 and launched his popular eponymous show in 2004.
In 2012, he became co-host of the Scott Mills show with Chris Stark, and the two became popular for their humorous segments, including Innuendo Bingo. Scott has also co-hosted Saturday morning shows on BBC Radio 5 Live with Chris, presented the Eurovision Song Contest alongside Rylan Clark, and filled in for Zoe on Radio 2.
In 2022, Scott made the move to BBC Radio 2 to take over the weekday afternoon slot from veteran presenter Steve Wright, who passed away last year. And in 2024, he even won the BBC reality show Celebrity Race Across The World with his husband Sam.
It's clear that Scott is no stranger to BBC listeners, and now he's taking on the coveted breakfast show slot. So, if you have a celebrity story, video, or pictures, reach out to the entertainment team at The Agency. They'd love to hear from you.
