After 24 years of hosting BBC Radio 1, Scott Mills moved to BBC Radio 2 in August 2022 to replace the Steve Wright Show. Reflecting on his departure, Scott has now opened up about his emotional goodbye.
When confirming his exit, Scott made an emotional monologue on air with his former co-presenter Chris Stark saying: “When you sign up to Radio 1, you always know at some point you’re going to leave. But I would have dealt on this, if you told me back then that we would have done everything that we have got to do. I am super proud. I don’t want to go too deep right now because there’ll be another time for that. But I am super proud of us. I’m super proud of you. So, it’s a whole mix of emotions.”
Scott added: “I am so proud of you, and I’m so proud of what we have done together. Let’s not get emotional now, that’s for another time. But I’m feeling weird. I’m also feeling a little bit in denial that this is actually happening, but apparently it is.”
He's now opened up about the emotions he felt after his exit, saying: “Weird, I remember the last show, there was such a build-up and there’s lots of surprises that they don’t tell you about. Had a little cry at the end of the show which I’ve never done before, it’s never happened, not that there’s anything wrong with it. It really got me at the end, we had a big party and I woke up the next day and I was like ‘That’s it’, when you’re in the final throws of it, it doesn’t feel like it’s ending and then it just stops.”
Scott admitted he was “sad and exhausted” and compared his exit from BBC Radio 1 to his departure from Strictly Come Dancing in 2014. He said: “I remember feeling sad and also feeling exhausted by the whole thing. Me and Chris had been together for over ten years I’d been there for 24, so it’s a lot to take in.”
Announcing his move between stations, Scott said in July last year: “Time actually does fly when you’re having fun, and that’s certainly been the case over the past 24 years at my beloved Radio 1. The station I pretended to be on in my bedroom from the age of six. The station I told my mum I wanted to work at, but never in a million years thought I would.”
He went on to replace Steve Wright, with him saying: “There are too many people to thank from my Radio 1 journey. So to the immensely talented people I’ve worked with along the way, to our incredible listeners that have made us part of their everyday lives for so long and of course to Chris – not just my co-host, but one of my best friends in the world, which of course he will be forever. Thank you. I really cannot believe I’m going to be calling Radio 2 my new home! I’m beyond excited to be joining the team and working alongside my radio idols and friends at the legendary Wogan House. I would like to wish all the best to Steve, who is one of the finest broadcasters in the world and someone whom I look up to so much.”
Scott and Chris even roped in “official spokesman” Lewis Capaldi for the news. It was certainly an emotional goodbye for Scott, but he is now settled into his new home at BBC Radio 2 on weekdays at 2pm.
