Sci-fi music has brought back attention to Dundee's connection to the famous novel Frankenstein.
Exploring Dundee's association with Frankenstein will be part of the Science Fiction Experience rock concert next month. David Darling, the producer of the gig, has composed a musical piece inspired by the book, written by Mary Shelley while living in Dundee from 1812 to 1814. This coincides with the 200th anniversary of the 2nd English version of the renowned novel which was first to credit Shelley as the author in the UK. Darling said: “

We wanted to honor one of the city's most significant and noteworthy historic relationships with The Science Fiction Experience making its debut in Dundee. After rereading the novel to enhance my imagination, I built the song based on it, creating a strong, intimidating tune that would generate a heavy, uneasy atmosphere, leaving the spectators tense, just like the book. It's a dismal track with some intense shredding in the introduction, which then leads into the narrative through the words. We always aimed to immerse the onlookers and wider city in an experience, not only to host a show, and to truly celebrate the junction between music, science and literature. Frankenstein makes it possible to do that and to rekindle this gripping local connection in the process.” Daniel Cook - a professor of English literature and associate dean at the University of Dundee, and chair of The Mary Shelley Heritage Trust - added: “Frankenstein

is possibly the most influential novel ever written. Think of the numerous movie and theatre adaptations, comics and cartoons, and even cereals, candies and costumes, not to mention the fact that it has become a reference point for scientists, politicians and countless others. The Science Fiction Experience brings this abundant material back to life through heavy metal - a perfect combination, when we consider the hauntingly exquisite nature of the creation scene. This new collaboration also brings Frankenstein back to Dundee and the nearby areas that motivated a young Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin.” The Science Fiction Experience will take place at Dundee's Gardyne Theatre on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th April.
