Samantha Giles, who has played the iconic character of Bernice Blackstock on Emmerdale since 1998, has recently opened up about her time on the show and whether we may see Bernice back in the Dales in the near future.
The beloved character recently left the village for a new life in Portugal after revealing to her family that she was in a lot of debt. To balance the books, Bernice had taken a loan out in Nicola's name, which resulted in bailiffs entering the King family home and taking their possessions away. Nicola was left in a huge mess and concluded that she wouldn’t send Bernice to prison and would instead pay off her debt in return for her share of the B&B.
The harsh jibes between Bernice and her loved ones prompted her to reveal she'd be leaving the village, convinced that was the best thing to do. After packing her bags, Bernice left in the back of a taxi for a new life in Portugal.
In a video posted by the Emmerdale Twitter/X account, Samantha discussed how much she enjoyed the recent menopause storyline for Bernice. She said, ‘It was really nice to have Bernice playing a storyline which was actually quite serious but obviously, there are some funny moments. Giving a comedic character a serious storyline, I think, should be quite hard-hitting.’
The actress also revealed that she had received a lot of feedback from viewers, who had identified with the storyline. She commented, ‘At some points she was really upset, crying to Bob, feeling as though she was going mad, there was a serious side to it and I did get a lot of comments from people saying that they identified with it. That for me, I loved doing that story.’
When asked about whether we could see Bernice in the near future, Samantha teased, ‘Who knows what she's going to go off and do now? Who knows if she'll be back in the future. Thank you to Emmerdale, I'm going to miss everybody but hopefully I will work with them all again at some point in the future. It's not goodbye, it's au revoir...’
