Paisley Webster, a 31 year old full-time mum from Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham, was left traumatised after two rottweilers ran into her home on August 30th and attacked her cats. The incident occurred in front of her five screaming children, and the dogs had just attacked another dog before entering her home.
Paisley described the scene as “just awful” and said that the impact on her children had been “horrible”. She added that her children were experiencing nightmares and were on a waiting list for counselling. Fortunately, she had crated her two pet chihuahuas, Elsie and Woody, at the time of the attack, or else they would have been harmed as well. The children also have a newfound fear of large dogs, as they associate them with the attack.
Dave, one of the cats, was killed instantly in the attack, and the other cat, Oreo, had to be taken to the vet and later put down. Paisley believes that the owners of the dogs need to accept responsibility for the incident, as it is not the first time their dogs have escaped. Additionally, the police have not taken any steps to ensure public safety.
Paisley said that if it had been her, she would feel “mortified and remorseful” and would want to help in some way. The owners have not offered any help with the vet bills, and Paisley is worried that the dogs might escape again and attack someone else.
Dog attacks have recently been in the headlines, and prime minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed that the breed of the dogs will be banned in the UK by the end of the year.
West Midlands Police have spoken to the owners of the dogs and asked them to secure the animal, and are considering any further steps that need to be taken to ensure public safety.
