Christmas has come early this year as brands from Lidl to Asda have released their 2023 Christmas adverts. They are full of starpower, featuring Michael Bublé, Graham Norton, and Hannah Waddingham.
The latest addition to the list of festive commercials is the Sainsbury's advert with the help of Never Gonna Give You Up singer Rick Astley.
The ad begins with a young girl wondering away from her mother in a supermarket. She takes hold of the intercom and asks a big question: “Hey Sainsbury’s, I have a question. It’s about Santa.”
All the adults in the store gasp and the scene shifts to the North Pole where Santa can be heard saying “Uh oh.”
The scene then returns to the Sainsbury's store where Rick is shopping in the cheese aisle. He is dressed in a bright blue suit and is asked by a shop worker to observe the rules “Cheese before pudding. The guessing game continues when a worker in the bakery asks “Mince pies?” Santa is bored of the same old mince pies year after year, but the idea of a Belgian chocolate mousse crafted into the shape of a snowy village certainly piques his interest.
Rick commented on his involvement in the commercial, saying that food always “plays such an important part during the holidays.” He added, “We’re always looking to bring something exciting to the Christmas dinner table whether that’s a new starter or a surprise showstopping dessert.” He concluded that it was an “honour and so much fun” to join the Sainsbury's store team and that they “pulled him up on his cheeseboard before dessert suggestion!”
