Firefighters were present at the site of an episode in Birmingham city centre where an unidentified material had been spilled.

The centre of the city was brought to a standstill following the incident at the Lord Chancellor's office in the afternoon.

Trams were shut off from Corporation Street to Bull Street, and individuals were urged to stay clear of the area.

West Midlands Police attended the location a little after 4.30pm after the building was cleared out.

Crews turned up to the incident at 4pm today and the cordon was enlarged with 30 firefighters from six teams offering assistance.

A declaration from the force declared: ‘We are currently at the Lord Chancellors office, Bull Street, Birmingham.

‘We were called to Bull Street at around 4.35pm after the building was evacuated.

A cordon is in effect while our associates from West Midlands Fire Service investigate the spillage of an unknown substance.’

Bull Street is currently shut and the incident has also impacted the tram services, which have been hindered in both directions.
