Reality TV star Nermina Pieters-Mekic, best known for her role in The Real Housewives of Cheshire, has revealed that she was pregnant when she was informed of her breast cancer diagnosis.
In an emotional statement to OK magazine, Nermina, 33, revealed that she had found a lump in her breast back in July. Despite visiting her GP, she was not overly concerned.
However, her mum advised her to have it investigated, and it was then that she was diagnosed with an early-stage aggressive breast cancer.
Nermina, who is already a mum to two-year-old Alaya, shared her heartbreak at the news, as she was pregnant at the time of her diagnosis. She told OK:
“I was pregnant when I found out I had cancer, it broke my heart we couldn’t keep the baby – nobody should ever find themselves in that unthinkable position. One night, I couldn’t sleep. I sat in Alaya’s nursery. I looked at her height chart on the wall and thought, ‘What if I’m not here to witness this in a few years? What if I don’t see her grow up?”
Nermina then shared a powerful message on Instagram, saying: “I never in my wildest dreams thought this would happen to me. I never get ill, I eat a good diet…” She went on to emphasise how cancer doesn’t discriminate, as one in seven women will get breast cancer in their lifetime, and many of those are young women.
Nermina is currently in a relationship with Dutch footballer Erik Pieters, and has received messages of support from Housewives co-star Lauren Simon and Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan.
