Reader questions why Bethesda struggles with creating quality Fallout titles.
As a fan of the Fallout franchise, I have always been captivated by its post-apocalyptic world and immersive gameplay. However, with the recent success of the TV show, Fallout has reached new levels of fame and popularity, which was definitely unexpected. I never would have predicted this back in 2024, especially since we have not had a proper new game in nine years, and it seems like it will be at least another five years before we get another one.

I have heard rumors that Microsoft may be fast-tracking a spin-off, but it won't be developed by Bethesda. Instead, they are currently focused on Starfield DLC and The Elder Scrolls 6. While some may be disappointed by this, I personally don't mind. After all, many different teams have worked on the Fallout franchise over the years, and in my opinion, Bethesda is not the best.

It's important to note that Bethesda did not create Fallout. When they acquired the franchise from publisher Interplay, there were already four games in existence - two mainline sequels and two spin-offs. These games were all top-down and graphically primitive, but they laid the foundation for the series with iconic elements such as the Brotherhood of Steel, Super Mutants, Ghouls, and Deathclaws.

I don't want to discredit Bethesda completely - they have definitely made significant technical advancements with Fallout 3 compared to its predecessors. In fact, many of the revolutionary aspects of Skyrim's open-world gameplay can be traced back to Fallout 3. It was the first game to offer such a detailed and interactive open-world experience, setting a new standard that is still influential today.

However, with each new game, from Skyrim to Fallout 76, it seems like Bethesda is just recycling the same gameplay and visuals. Even their upcoming sci-fi game, Starfield, appears to be following the same formula. In my opinion, it's not as interesting as the earlier games, as it keeps the worst parts and leaves out the best.

I want to be fair to Bethesda here, but I have to admit that they are better at building worlds and crafting quests than they are at other aspects of game development. As a Fallout fan, I have come to appreciate the vibrant modding community that constantly adds new content and improves upon the games in unexpected ways. Just look at Fallout London, the most ambitious fan mod to date.

While Bethesda may have created the foundation for modern Fallout games, I believe that other developers are better at building upon it, particularly Obsidian, who made New Vegas - a game that many fans consider to be the best of the series. It's a shame that Bethesda never asked them, or anyone else, to make another Fallout game, as it could have prevented the long gaps between sequels.

Furthermore, I believe that Bethesda's stubbornness and resistance to change is holding them back. Starfield is a perfect example, as it shows that they are slow to embrace new ideas or even acknowledge that change is needed. Although I am still hopeful for The Elder Scrolls 6, I am not confident that Fallout 5 will be a significant improvement. However, I have no doubt that modders will once again step in and make it better.

As a final note, I want to emphasize that these are my personal opinions and do not reflect the views of GameCentral or Metro. I am simply a dedicated fan sharing my thoughts on the future of the Fallout franchise. Who knows, maybe Bethesda will surprise us all and deliver a game that exceeds our expectations. Only time will tell.
