As a parent, I can say that having kids changes your perspective on things. Before, I used to enjoy horror movies and violent video games, but now that I have little ones to take care of, those things don't seem as appealing. However, I still indulge in them occasionally when I have time alone.
That being said, I am eagerly anticipating the release of GTA 6 after watching the Netflix show. But as a responsible parent, I am also worried about keeping it out of the hands of my young boys, who are seven and eight years old. I have seen some people complain about the lack of gore in the game, but that's not my main concern.
The game still features a lot of violence, swearing, and nudity that are not suitable for children. My fear is that even though the game is rated mature and intended for adults, it will still end up in the hands of young children. I know from talking to other parents that some of them don't pay attention to age ratings and let their kids watch or play whatever they want.
They often justify it by saying that it didn't do them any harm, but I beg to differ. As a gamer, I know that games can have an impact on our emotions and thoughts. I am not advocating for a ban on games like GTA 6, but I also don't want young and impressionable children to be exposed to such mature content.
The whole point of the game is to do whatever you want, including violent and antisocial acts, which can have a negative effect on young minds. And with the ultra-realistic graphics of GTA 6, the violence and nudity are even more likely to have a stronger impact. Some may argue that children can already access porn and other disturbing content, but how does that make the situation any better?
It's still harmful, and at least it's not interactive like a video game. I can understand why there is no gore in GTA 6, as it would make Mortal Kombat look like a child's game. I don't have a solution to this problem, but I believe it's a real concern that has been slowly creeping up on us.
In the past, when graphics were not as realistic, the violence in games didn't have the same impact because it didn't look or feel real. But with advancements in technology, the problem has only gotten worse, and nothing has been done to address it. When a game looks almost identical to real life, it's hard to draw a line on what is acceptable and what isn't.
It's not enough to say that the game is intended for adults, because we all know that younger players will still be drawn to it. I don't know what the solution is, but it's something that worries me not just for GTA 6, but for all future games. As a reader and a parent, I hope that game developers and rating boards will take these concerns into consideration and make responsible decisions when creating and rating games.
