I'm a reader who's been keeping a close eye on the release schedules and I'm dismayed to realise that Sony has no major first party exclusives currently scheduled. It's been over two years since Sony announced a new single-player, first party game for the PlayStation 5 and with Spider-Man 2 now out, Sony has no new first party games scheduled at all.
When you compare this to the various showcases done by Nintendo and Microsoft this year, it looks even worse for Sony and I'm really starting to be bothered by this. Why are they being so secretive and why do they think it's a good idea to say and do nothing?
Sony currently has three games known to be in development, starting with Marvel's Wolverine by the makers of Spider-Man 2. Although there's no indication of when they will be released, since not even the year is confirmed, considering that Spider-Man 2 only just came out, I'd assume there's little chance of Wolverine being out next year.
They've also got two live service games announced, called Concord and Fairgame$, and there's no clue when they're out either. Plus, there's The Last Of Us multiplayer game, but not only have we not seen that, and it doesn't have a date, but rumours suggest it's been put on indefinite hold or just outright cancelled.
The only game that Sony has on its books right now which actually does have a release date is Helldivers 2, coming out on February 8. This is mostly a multiplayer game, and it's not even developed by Sony, and is coming out on PC on the same day.
I'm baffled as to why Sony's not taking full advantage of the success of the PlayStation 5. Let's assume a best case scenario, where Sony announces two or three new games at The Game Awards, but even then, it won't be released quickly and it'll take a long time for Sony to get back into the rhythm of releasing a big new game every three months or so.
Sony's approach to this is being so badly handled that I can't believe it. I'm not sure any of those live service games are actually going to get released now and Naughty Dog, on the back of the huge success of the TV show, announced The Last Of Us spin-off on stage and now it's probably never coming out.
It's a real shame that Sony has taken this approach because, as a reader, I'm not getting any of my money anymore because they won't release anything new for me to buy!
