Protests over RG Kar horror continue as thousands take to the streets for 'Reclaim the Night' event.
In Kolkata, this Sunday was set to witness a surge of people taking to the streets in West Bengal. Various demonstrations were planned, including another 'Reclaim the Night' protest, all seeking justice for the tragic death of a doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital a month ago.

The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor was discovered on the morning of August 9th at the state-run hospital in north Kolkata. The incident sent shockwaves throughout the community and sparked a call for action. Notable figures from different fields, such as musicians, artistes, painters, and actors, were joining in on the 'Reclaim the Night' demonstration, which was set to begin at 11 pm with the intention of "awakening the ruler," according to social activist Rimjhim Sinha.

As part of the demonstration, people would gather at various intersections, crossings, and roundabouts throughout the city. Along the SC Mallick Road in south Kolkata, there would be multiple gatherings from Gol Park to Garia, while a march was planned from Sodepur to Shyambazar along the BT Road in the north, as informed by one of the organizers. In addition to Kolkata, similar demonstrations were also scheduled in Barrackpore, Barasat, Budgebudge, Belgharia, Agarpara, Dumdum, and Baguiati.

This 'Reclaim the Night' demonstration had previously taken place on August 14th and September 4th, all with the same goal of seeking justice for the doctor whose death had deeply affected the state. In the afternoon, alumni from 44 schools would come together for a protest march from Gariahat to Rasbehari Avenue in south Kolkata. Many other social groups had also planned similar demonstrations throughout the day in different parts of the state.

As the investigation into the doctor's death continues, a civic volunteer of the Kolkata Police has been arrested in connection with the case. Currently, the CBI is handling the investigation following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
