Tragically, Laura Ilg, 31, and her unborn baby were killed when her two-year-old son got hold of a gun and shot her in the back. On last Friday at 1.14pm, Ilg called 911 and reported that she was 33 weeks pregnant and her toddler had shot her. Desperate for help, Ilg told the dispatcher, "I'm upstairs. I need help."
When the dispatcher asked if her front door was unlocked, Ilg responded, "Tell them to break in, please, hurry." Then, Ilg's husband Alek also called 911 to report that she had screamed for him to call police.
Police arrived three minutes after the first call and forced their way into the Ohio home. Ilg was rushed to Fisher Titus Medical Center and underwent an emergency C-section. However, less than an hour after the first 911 call, Ilg's unborn son was pronounced dead. Ilg was also pronounced dead shortly after.
Police recovered a SIG Sauer P365, shell casings and the loaded magazine from the home. The handgun was stored in a nightstand in the couple's bedroom. They also had a 12-gauge shotgun and a rifle in their home. Norwalk Police Chief David Smith said, "The gun was left out, but it shouldn't have been accessible to the child.
