Pre-teens rewarded with new lawn equipment for completing a 50 yard challenge, inspired by 'The Lawnmower Man'.
Two 11-year-olds from Gadsden, Alabama had a very special surprise. Ja’Torrian Taylor and Tevin Rice, who founded TJ & JT Mowing Service, had chosen to take part in the 50 Yard Challenge. This challenge was created by Rodney Smith Jr., also known as The Lawnmower Man. He wanted to help those who couldn't take care of their lawns properly, such as the elderly and veterans.

Taylor and Rice decided to take part after seeing an elderly woman struggling with a mower and a walker. They completed the job, and their business was born! The Lawnmower Man was so impressed that he made his way to Gadsden to give the boys some much-needed equipment for their business.

Smith created the 50 Yard Challenge back in 2017, and since then close to 5,000 teens have participated nationwide. To prove they have completed the challenge, participants take a picture of themselves holding up a sign which says “I accept the 50 Yard Challenge”. If they succeed, they then receive a white Raising Men/Women shirt, as well as some shades and ear protection. For every 10 yards cut, they receive an additional t-shirt in a different color.

While presenting the boys with their new equipment, Smith said, “Giving these boys lawn equipment is teaching them discipline. If they tell someone they are going to mow a lawn, they need to mow the lawn.” He then added, “These are good, hard-working kids that deserve some gratitude. Remember, this is not the end; it’s just the beginning.”
