As the weekend comes to a close, Colorado's mountain ranges are still blanketed in a thick layer of snow. According to the National Weather Service, the storm is not quite done with us yet, as there could be a few more inches of snowfall before it moves on.
Between Sunday morning and Monday evening, forecasters predict another 4 to 6 inches of snow to fall on the mountain passes above 9,000 feet. This includes popular routes such as Loveland Pass, Cumberland Pass, Independence Pass, Berthoud Pass, Eisenhower Tunnel, and Wolf Creek Pass. Those traveling at higher elevations, particularly in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, could see even more snow accumulation, with an additional 10 to 12 inches expected on Sunday alone.
In fact, over the past couple of days, the San Juan Mountains have already received between 12 and 18 inches of snow, according to a snowfall map from the National Weather Service. And it's not just the peaks that are getting hit - lower elevations have also seen a decent amount of snow, with 3 to 8 inches falling since Friday.
The Winter Storm Warning for the San Juan Mountains will remain in effect until 9 p.m. on Sunday for elevations above 8,500 feet. After that, while the snow will continue into Monday morning, it should taper off by the afternoon.
Meanwhile, in warmer and lower elevations, the storm is bringing rain showers and even some thunderstorms. This will continue intermittently on Sunday and Monday before finally clearing up on Tuesday. For those in Denver, the rainiest period is expected to be between 5 a.m. and noon on Monday, according to forecasters from the National Weather Service.
