Russell Brand, the actor and comedian, is facing serious allegations of rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse spanning a period of seven years. Four women have come forward to claim the abuse began in 2006 when Brand was at the height of his fame, appearing in movies and hosting on BBC Radio 2 and Channel 4.
The Metro Police have issued a statement encouraging anyone who has been subject to similar abuse to come forward. The statement said, "We are aware of media reporting of a series of allegations of sexual assault. At this time, we have not received any reports in relation to this. If anyone believes they have been the victim of a sexual assault, no matter how long ago it happened, we would encourage them to contact police."
The allegations were made public by a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4 Dispatches. In response, Brand released a video on Friday, denying all claims made against him, and accusing the media of a ‘co-ordinated attack’. He went on to perform a sold-out comedy gig at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre on Saturday evening.
One of the women has alleged that Brand groomed her when she was 16. She claims that he would provide her with scripts on how to deceive her parents into allowing her to visit him. Brand's former literary agent, co-founder of Tavistock Wood, has backed up the accusations, releasing a statement saying they were "horribly misled" by Brand, and that they have since terminated all professional ties to him.
The Agency is urging anyone who believes they may have been a victim of sexual assault to contact police. Furthermore, if anyone has a celebrity story to share, they are encouraged to get in touch with The Agency entertainment team.
