A man from Sydney is due to appear in court next month after being caught by police with a staggering 60 kilos of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of $55.5 million. The discovery was made when officers noticed the 42-year-old acting suspiciously while driving a car and later a truck in Eastwood, a suburb in the northern part of the city.
The following day, police seized two shopping bags from a truck parked on an Earlwood street, which allegedly contained one kilo of methamphetamine. The investigation continued and four days later, on June 28, a search of a car in a supermarket car park uncovered six cooler shopping bags in the boot, each containing 10 kilos of the illicit drug.
Authorities stated that the total amount of drugs found had the potential to cause harm and destruction, with an estimated street value of $55.5 million. As a result, the man was taken into custody on June 29 and charged with possessing a commercial quantity of unlawfully imported border controlled drugs, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
Further investigations led to a search of the man's residence in Earlwood, where officers seized several items including mobile phones, a laptop, six luxury watches, and clothing. The man was brought before the Parramatta Local Court on June 30 and was remanded in custody. The following day, he appeared before the same court on July 1.
The 42-year-old will next appear in court on August 28 at the Downing Centre Local Court. In other news, the Olympic Games Paris 2024 will be broadcasted live and free on Channel 9 and 9Now.
