A major incident has been declared in Sydney's south-west after a man, who was allegedly armed with a knife, passed away following an attempted carjacking. The police were alerted to the situation and quickly responded to the scene on Remembrance Driveway in Tahmoor at around 1pm yesterday.
According to reports, the man was trying to stop traffic and force his way into vehicles while holding a knife. As soon as the officers arrived, they found the 33-year-old man lying on the bonnet of a car that was stopped in traffic. The police immediately drew their Taser and instructed the man to lay on the ground, which he complied with.
Thankfully, the Taser was not discharged and the man was taken into custody with the help of members of the public. Paramedics were called to the scene and the man was transported to the hospital under police supervision. However, during the journey, the man suffered a sudden and severe medical episode, causing the ambulance to pull over and provide urgent medical care.
Two more ambulance crews and additional police officers rushed to the scene to offer their assistance. Despite their best efforts to revive him, the man tragically passed away at Liverpool Hospital shortly after. In light of this devastating event, a critical incident team from Bankstown Police Area Command will be leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
Moreover, the case will also be independently reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
