The incident was first reported by another driver who noticed a car in the woods off the side of the road around 11am on Sunday. The bear quickly left the area while troopers were still on the scene, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation. At the time of the accident, Ducharme was the only person in the car. Police believe that he lost control of his vehicle, hit the guardrail multiple times, and ultimately went off the right side of the road. He then went down an embankment and collided with several trees.
Hatfield is known to be a part of the established range for black bears in Massachusetts, and there are estimated to be over 4500 bears in the state.
