On a train bound for Belfast, a troubling and unsettling incident occurred. It has been reported that a man, who claimed to be a police officer, was seen carrying a gun and approaching young female passengers. This alarming situation resulted in the suspect being charged and arrested at a train station in Belfast on Thursday.
According to police, the 52-year-old suspect approached two teenage girls at the Holywood train station in Co Down. He allegedly revealed his weapon, tucked into his belt, after engaging in conversation with the girls. The suspect proceeded to board the same train as the girls and even took a seat next to another teenage girl, placing his gun on his lap.
Understandably, this caused great fear and distress for the young girl. She disembarked the train at the next stop, while train staff became aware of the man's actions and promptly escorted him off the train at the next station. However, the situation escalated when the man allegedly pointed his gun at security personnel while being detained.
Upon further investigation, a BB gun or airgun was found during a search by police. The suspect has since been charged with impersonating a police officer and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He is scheduled to appear at Laganside Magistrates Court on Saturday.
Detective Sergeant McCartan expressed his concern for the young women involved in this distressing ordeal. He stated that no one should ever have to experience such harassing and intimidating behavior, at any time or place. Detectives are currently seeking witnesses to assist in their investigation.
