Plans to conduct the survey of the adults and children with special needs

There are different types of adults and children who have special needs in all districts of the state, but there is no specific number regarding this. In this regard, the statutory and statistical department in the respective districts is planning for a survey of the specially-abled. Kuttanda Paali Dinesh ( M G Paali-Taamane Maruvanda), recipient of Sarvottama award on Republic Day celebrations, who works in the same department, said that the guidelines are being prepared jointly by the government and the department.

Responding to 'Shakthi', she said, there are people suffering from various disabilities including hearing impairment, dementia, vision and multiple-organ failures. Considering that there are no exact statistics of such people, the government is planning to conduct a survey. Bearing in mind that there are many national and state schemes to help the people with special needs the government is considering the survey to help the needy, she said. Even the senior citizens have a lot of problems and also there are many schemes to help them out. She held that if the various associations come forward with the details, needed help will be offered from the department. But, she said there are criteria to be followed and urged the associations to follow the same. Presently, she said, there is shortage of teachers who could guide the specially-abled and believes that compared to other districts, the count of people with special-needs is very less in Kodagu.
