Bhopal has witnessed a sharp rise in incidents of people losing their mobile phones to robbers and anti-social elements at night. According to police officials, 24 such cases have been registered in the last two months alone. However, a worrying factor is that when people approach the police for registering a complaint, the FIR is registered under the sections of theft instead of robbery or snatching.
For example, on July 2, Rewa resident Rohit Kushwaha was in the city to undergo training in railways when he was robbed of his mobile phone by unidentified bike-borne men in Saket Nagar late at night. He then approached the Bagsewaniya police station and the police registered a case of theft under Section 356 of IPC instead of registering it under Section 392 or 394. On the same night, a private company employee Shakhawat Khan was returning home from work when he too was robbed of his mobile phone by unidentified bike-borne men. The police registered the case under Section 356 of IPC.
Sources have revealed that several junior police officials often connive with the accused in such cases. If the accused are booked under Section 356 of IPC, they are only required to serve a short jail term, whereas if they are booked under Section 392 or 394, they are sentenced to rigorous imprisonment. This is more common at TT Nagar police station and Hanumanganj police station.
Police Commissioner Harinarayanachari Mishra has stated that once a probe has been launched in these cases, the sections under which the accused have been booked are rectified. Thanks to the CCTV cameras installed in various localities of the city, majority of these criminals are being brought to justice.
