Paloma Faith & Becky Hill win at LGBT Awards; Paul O’Grady’s husband accepts award in emotional moment.
Last night saw the 8th annual British LGBT Awards take place in London, sponsored by Macquarie and Tesco and supported by Metro. The event, hosted by Radio 1's Dean McCullough, was a celebration of the leading activists, allies, and celebrity figures working hard to advance the rights of LGBTQ+ people.

The ceremony was made even more special by the presence of the late Paul O'Grady's husband, Andre Portasio, who was invited to the stage by Julian Clary to accept a special award on behalf of the Lily Savage legend.

Paloma Faith accepted the LGBT+ Advocate Award, saying she was 'honoured' to receive it. She added that it was essential to support the LGBTQ+ community and those who were being targeted because of their sexuality.

Becky Hill, 29, scooped the Music Artist of the Year award, beating fellow nominees Mika, Yungblud and Cat Burns, while Katherine Ryan won the Celebrity Award, beating Alison Hammond, Michelle Visage and Emma Watson.

Erasure frontman Andy Bell picked up the prestigious lifetime achievement award for his relentless campaigning throughout his long career.

Footballer Jake Daniels, who came out as gay in 2021, was named Sports Personality of the Year.

The night was also attended by Love Island star Amber Gill, Krystal Versace, and Bruno Tonioli.

Commenting on the winners, host Dean McCullough said: “It was absolutely fantastic to be a part of the British LGBT Awards and present all of these incredible winners. It was a brilliant night which celebrated the very best of our community.”

British LGBT Awards founder Sarah Garrett MBE said: “Tonight was a fantastic celebration of the very best of our community and I congratulate all of the winners. The British LGBT Awards has grown to become the most recognisable awards event for LGBT+ people in Britain since we launched eight years ago. We were delighted to be able to honour the people who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing LGBT+ rights. All of the winners and nominees are incredibly deserving.”
