In Mumbai, the number of injuries from the traditional 'Dahi Handi' celebration has unfortunately risen to 376, according to officials who provided an update on Sunday. Out of these, 90 'govindas' (participants) are currently receiving treatment in hospitals, while 286 have been discharged after receiving care. For those unfamiliar with the event, the 'Dahi Handi' celebration is held the day after the Janmashtami festival, which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna.
It involves forming a human pyramid to break a pot filled with curd, which is tied at a considerable height. However, this year's celebrations have been marred by a high number of injuries. The data collected from different hospitals in the city revealed that CT hospitals reported the highest number of injuries, with 183 'govindas' being treated.
The WS hospitals followed with 126 injuries, and there are also other hospitals currently treating injured participants. These figures are significantly higher than the previous update from BMC on Saturday, which reported 118 injuries. Sadly, the celebrations have also resulted in a tragic loss of life.
A seven-year-old boy named Rudra Kadam lost his life when a brick structure collapsed during the festivities at Ekta Welfare Society in Malad West. According to reports, the event organizers had tied the safety ropes for the Dahi Handi to a nearby tree and a ground-floor brick column of a building under construction. However, under the tension of the pyramid attempts, the column gave way, and Rudra was struck, suffering fatal head injuries.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was declared dead upon arrival. In another unfortunate incident, a 45-year-old woman named Salma Salauddin Pathan lost her life in Pimpri-Chinchwad area of Pune. The accident occurred when an iron frame set up for the celebrations collapsed on her.
Salma had attended the event with her husband and son, who was a volunteer for the Vighnaharta Mandal organizing the event. The grieving family, even in their time of immense loss, showed incredible restraint by choosing not to file a complaint against the organizers. They considered the youth involved in the event to be like family and did not want to harm their future.
However, a case of accidental death has been officially registered by the police. These incidents serve as a reminder for everyone involved in organizing and participating in such events to prioritize safety measures and ensure that such tragedies do not occur in the future. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by the 'Dahi Handi' celebrations in Mumbai.
