Oti Mabuse has always been a fan favorite on the beloved BBC primetime series Strictly Come Dancing. Having won the series twice with Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher and comedian Bill Bailey, the 33-year-old recently decided to take a step back from the show in February of 2022.
However, despite the glamorous and glitzy appearances on TV, Oti has revealed that there were often difficult times behind the scenes. Speaking on the All Change podcast, she shared how grateful she was to have her husband Marius Lepure around to support her through the hard times.
“He’s seen me not eat, he’s seen me overeat, he’s seen me struggle with not being able to get the best out of someone. He’s seen me having to deal with interesting personalities. So, he’s the person that’s seen the behind the scenes at the point where I’d got to where I was like: ‘I think I’m finished’. He was like: ‘Yeah I think there’s this new thing that’s got a fire in your stomach. When you’re hosting or talking to people you’re a completely different person’.”
Although many fans and viewers were shocked by Oti’s decision to leave the show, she understands why. “When you come from the biggest show on television, and people are obsessed with it, then when you decide you’re going to leave, it’s like: ‘What? What do you mean?’ I was met with a lot of: ‘Why would you leave? You’re happy, you’re at the top of your professional game, your personal game, you won the show? Why would you leave?’”
Despite the difficulty of her decision, Oti is grateful for the platform Strictly gave her and is thankful that ITV held their arms open when she needed somewhere to land. Now she is a judge on Dancing on Ice and hosts her own breakfast show, aptly titled Oti Mabuse’s Breakfast Show. It was on the show that Oti and Marius announced the happy news that they were expecting their first child together. An emotional Oti wiped her eyes while Marius punched the air with joy.
