In the world of gaming, there has always been a debate about which console is the best. And while many may argue for the newest and most cutting-edge model, I have a different opinion. Despite the hype surrounding the PS5, I have to say that the PS4 is still my favorite console of all time. Let me explain why.
After sharing my list of top PlayStation games from the last 30 years, I thought it would be interesting to also look at some games that, while they may have been available on other platforms, I still associate with PlayStation. But before we dive into that, I want to talk about my top five PlayStation consoles and accessories.
When it comes to games that I associate with PlayStation, there are a few that stand out in my mind. One of them is Tomb Raider. Although I first played Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One, I remember being blown away by its predecessor on the PlayStation. The T-Rex, the butler in the fridge, and the infamous "pervy cheat" all left a lasting impression on me.
Another game that holds a special place in my heart is Tony Hawk's Skateboarding. My friends and I spent countless hours playing this game and competing for the highest score. And although I can't recall if it was split screen or not, I do remember the fierce competition and the fun we had.
Metal Gear Solid is another game that I associate with PlayStation. As a late adopter of the console, I didn't have much money for new games. But luckily, I knew someone who sold copied discs. And Metal Gear Solid was one of the few games I managed to complete at the time. Replaying it recently, I realized that while it may not have as much stealth as I remembered, it still had its cheesy charm.
Resident Evil 2 was another game that captured my attention on the PlayStation. I remember playing the demo version over and over again, and being blown away by the graphics and gameplay. And while I had dabbled in the first game, this one seemed like a huge improvement in every way.
Last but not least, FIFA 98 onwards holds a special place in my heart. I remember being envious of my friend who had the game on PC, and the anticipation I felt waiting for my birthday when my parents got me World Cup 98 for my PlayStation. My friends and I would often rent the latest edition from the local Blockbuster and spend hours playing it during school holidays.
Now, let's move on to my top five PlayStation consoles and peripherals. Starting with an honorable mention, the PS Vita. While it didn't have enough support in the long run, I did have a great time playing Tearaway and my first Uncharted game on it.
Next up is the PlayStation VR. I was lucky enough to pick up the original version at a discounted price, and it definitely blew my mind at first. However, I didn't find many games that I truly enjoyed, with the exception of Astro Bot: Rescue Mission. I do feel that Sony missed an opportunity by not making it backwards compatible with the PlayStation VR2.
Of course, we can't forget about the PlayStation, the console that started it all. While I wasn't heavily into gaming at the time, I can still appreciate the impact it has had on the industry. I wish I could go back in time and experience classics like Spyro The Dragon, Ape Escape, and Tomb Raider on their original console.
The PlayStation 5 has been a bit of a mixed bag for me. While I was an early adopter and enjoyed games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, I struggled to see how they differed from PlayStation 4 games. And after trading my PS5 for a portable gaming PC, I ended up regretting it and buying a second-hand PS5 later on.
Moving on to my top two consoles, the PSP is definitely a standout for me. Being able to play games on the go was a game-changer for me, and I have fond memories of playing FIFA, Grand Theft Auto, and Tekken on it. It was truly ahead of its time as a handheld multimedia device.
But the crown jewel of PlayStation consoles, in my opinion, is the PlayStation 4. As an early adopter, I could see the improvement in graphics and gameplay compared to the PlayStation 3. And with more disposable income, I was able to buy many newly released games day one. From completing the remastered version of GTA 5 to experiencing the Uncharted trilogy for the first time, the PS4 holds a special place in my heart.
But it was in 2018 that the PS4 truly shined, with the release of God of War and Spider-Man within months of each other. And while I wasn't initially impressed with Red Dead Redemption 2, I have since changed my mind and consider it one of the best games ever made. The fact that games are still being released for the PS4 goes to show how great of a console it truly is.
In conclusion, while the PS5 may be the newest and most hyped console, the PS4 will always hold a special place in my heart as the best console Sony has ever produced. With its impressive library of games and the memories I have associated with it, it will always be my favorite.
