Okla. officers who killed unarmed Black man reinstated following order.
Revised Text:
Two former Oklahoma officers are set to be reinstated following the killing of an unarmed Black man.

Robert Hinkle and Nathan Ronan - formerly of Lawton - were ordered to be reinstated by an arbitrator in the killing of Quadry Sanders, which occurred in December 2021. According to U.S. News and World & World Report, the city of Lawton has expressed its disagreement with the arbitrator’s order.

In a statement made to ABC 7, city officials said they were “disappointed with the outcome” of the proceedings, which they noted were “administrative in nature and limited to administrative violations.” The statement added that the two arbitrators found that the officers “acted in accordance with their training and within policy.”

Gary James, the attorney for Hinkle and Ronan, said that the two officers will also receive back pay. He defended their actions, saying that the officers saw Sanders reach into his pocket which prompted the shots.

Although the two officers were fired and charged with manslaughter in 2022 after body camera footage was released, BLACK ENTERPRISE reported that the family’s attorney, Lee Merritt, said there was no justification for the shooting. Mina Woods, the mother of Sanders, filed a federal lawsuit against Hinkle, Ronan, and the city for wrongful death.

The medical examiner’s report revealed that Sanders was shot 12 times. He was reported as armed inside the home of a person listed on a protective order in 2021, though body camera footage showed his hands were raised above his head when he was shot.

The federal case is still pending.
