Odisha to import 5 Royal Bengal Tigers from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh by September.
Bhubaneswar, a beautiful city in Odisha, is taking steps to increase their population of majestic Royal Bengal Tigers. The forest officials have recently initiated the process of relocating five tigers from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, with the completion of the transfer set for September.

Susanta Nanda, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests-Wildlife, shared that out of the five tigers, three will be released into the Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Sambalpur, while the remaining two will find a new home in the Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj. He also mentioned that both Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh have given their consent for the relocation and have already identified the tigers from their respective core areas.

In order to ensure a smooth transition, two teams of forest officials from Odisha will be visiting the two states within the next week to meet the tigers before their big move. This relocation comes as a result of the latest tiger estimation conducted in 2023-24, where 30 tigers and eight cubs were found in 47 forest divisions of Odisha. Among these, 27 tigers were spotted in the Similipal Tiger Reserve, while the remaining were found in other areas like Keonjhar, Paralakhemundi, and Hirakud.

In other exciting news, Nandankanan Zoological Park is preparing to welcome two new giraffes by the end of this month. These giraffes will be brought in from Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata through an animal exchange program. At present, the zoo is home to one giraffe named 'Khushi', and the addition of two more will bring a diverse range of animals to the zoo.

However, amidst all the good news, there was a sad event as well. The zoo's male lion, 'Krish', who was born in 2004, passed away on Wednesday due to old age. His death was mourned by all, but the officials are determined to continue their efforts in preserving and protecting the diverse wildlife in Odisha.

All this goes to show the dedication and hard work put in by the forest officials and the government in creating a safe and sustainable environment for these magnificent creatures in Odisha.
